Declaring Your Intentions
When was the last time you sat down by yourself, and truly asked yourself:
“What do I want out of life?”
What is the first thing that pops into your head? Is it something material like a house, a car, a holiday, new jewellery? Or is it a feeling, like happiness or love? When I am asking you about what do you want out of life, I am asking you to connect with a feeling or word to be your guiding force.
When I was teenager, my Dad and I had this poem which we used as that guide –
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck out out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit
It is interesting: I have not read that poem in many years however it takes me back, it connects me with why we used that, I am connected with the challenges we had at the time, and this one poem truly did guide us. I can see how far I have come. This poem was so deeply connected with what our intentions for life was, it truly was a guiding light for us.
What about you? What is that one intention, which can connect you to the essence of who you are? When was the last time you connected with you? Connecting with yourself, and setting goals and intentions which are not based on a material possession, is really about asking yourself what lights you up.
If you are someone who is quite anxious, perhaps an intention you may want to feel in your life is Calm, Grounded, Worthy, Balanced or Confident.
If you are someone who is wanting to be heard, perhaps an intention you may want to feel in your life is Expressive, Gutsy, Brave, Bold or Courageous.
Finding, and connecting, with this intention is something just for you. It is personal, and not something someone can tell you. And what a weight off our shoulders that can be, there is no right or wrong answer. There is no listening to what others think we should be doing. It is just you and how you want to feel. Setting this intention, connecting with yourself and what you desire from life, is only something you can do. You do not need to wait for a new year, a new moon, a new start, or anything like that. You can choose to set this intention today.
If you are seeking a direction in your life or are over feeling frustrated and stuck, then starting with this intention, I feel, is a brilliant way to connect with you.
Is this something you would like some help and guidance on? Then I feel we need to talk about how a coaching series can best support you in setting your intentions for your life. Head to the work with me page for details and let us book in a chat today.
